Author Interview: AJ Skelly

Do you love Twilight and werewolf books? Yes? Good! Then you’ll love these paranormal romance books by AJ Skelly. I am very happy to share my interview of this author and the information about her upcoming sequel.

How long have you been writing and what is some writing advice?

I think I’ve always wanted to write.  I remember when I was little–like elementary–wanting to make up stories and create fantastic worlds with my metaphorical pen.  I also LOVED the Anne of Green Gables movies and wanted to be a writer like Anne.  🙂 All of that to say, I found out that I still want to write now that I’m grown. 😉  I find deep enjoyment and satisfaction in writing, so I keep doing it.  I think some of the best writing advice I know is that, “All the magic happens in the edits.”  It’s okay when that first draft looks dreadful.  It’s supposed to. Just write.  Write the story.  You can fix the problems later, but only if you write it out the first time.

What are your favorite paranormal romance books?

I enjoy the genre, but I have trouble finding just the right paranormal romance books that check all the boxes for me, which is one of the big reasons I wrote First Shift.  I couldn’t find the book that was exactly what I wanted, so I wrote one.  I did enjoy the Twilight books way back when, I like Shiver, and The Judgement of the Six series, though I haven’t read any of the off-shoot novellas.

I really loved First Shift and I’m looking forward to Rogue Shift. Do you have any other books in the works for the series?

I’m so glad you enjoyed it!  I’ve been overwhelmed by the overall positive response to my wolves in Rock Falls!  Rogue Shift will pick up the story right where First Shift left off, but Rachel and Kyp will be the narrators.  My editor has Sworn Shift right now, though it’s not yet under contract.  The current final book in the series is Pack Shift…though one of the other characters won’t leave me alone…so someday there may be a fifth one. At some point I’d like to put out a prequel (Dark Shift) that gives some of the background of the conflict that’s found in First Shift–a little insight into Victor Atwood’s ancestors.

I actually just finished with my edits to The Troll Queen–I’ll make another pass on it later, but it needs to sit just a bit first.  The Troll Queen is actually the second book in my next series, Tales of Sugar and Spice.  The first book in Tales of Sugar and Spice is The Rat King.  It’s a YA retelling of The Nutcracker.  It was SO much fun to write.  I’m really, really excited about it, and really hope to be able to share it with the world soon.  I’m currently writing the last book in the trilogy, The Fae Prince.  Because the Sugar Plum Fairy needed her own story, too.

Which character is your favorite from the series? (Don’t worry, I won’t tell the others).

Oh man.  This is such a great but tough question!  LOL. I love all of the characters, but I know Sam and Megan the best.  They’ve been rattling around in my head the longest–nearly a decade at this point.  Today, I think my favorite is Sam.  He’s the ultimate white knight, as it were.  But last week, my favorite was Cade (but you’ll have to wait until Pack Shift to get his full story).  And the week before that it was Raven (more from her in Sworn Shift!).

Blurb:

An outcast all his life because of his half-human, half-werewolf genes, Kyp is finally getting a chance to belong with the Wolfe pack.

Though fully human, Rachel never cared about his mixed blood. When a family tragedy strikes, Rachel makes an impulsive decision with deadly consequences. Kyp must come to her rescue. But when saving her turns her into a werewolf, it sets off a chain of events that puts them at odds with the Wolfe pack, and brings them straight into the path of the Wolfe’s greatest enemy—Victor Atwood.

War is coming to the packs, and Kyp and Rachel are at the center of it. With their fledgling love and a tenuous mental tie their only weapons, they must overcome the wrath of Atwood. But a toxic secret threatens to devastate them, destroying not only them but the entire Wolfe pack as well.
