I am super excited to interview M.C. Kennedy, a fellow Christian Fantasy author. She and I met through RealmMakers, a Christian speculative fiction group, and she is super sweet. Here is the interview:
How did you get started writing?
I wrote my first short story when I was about eight years old. My older brother had to write a story for one of his English lessons, and I thought it looked so fun that I just had to write one, too. I was hooked from that moment. The story was dreadful, but I thought it was the best thing ever, and I was determined to one day become an author.
How do you come up with ideas for your books?
It depends on the book. With my current series (The Chronicles of Rinnil), each of the books is a retelling of at least two different fairytales. With another of my early series, the early germ of the idea came from a card game with lovely illustrations. And for my first attempt at a novel, I was inspired by Anne of Green Gables. So basically, I get ideas from lots of different places! I never know when an idea will strike.
Who is your favorite character from your series?
Ean is my favorite from The Chronicles of Rinnil! Some readers might not agree with me on that, but he for some reason has a special place in my heart. He’s the brother of the heroine in A Wolf’s Rose, but he’s the protagonist of the sequel (which I’m currently working on)!
What are some of your favorite quotes from the stories?
Here are a few of my favorites from AWR!
–“Somehow, he doubted that any of the Mactíres actually wanted to go shopping for candles. Especially seeing as the nearest market was the one they had just attacked.”
–“Oh, curse it all, what’s the use of having help if they don’t help?”
–“Even the other Mactíres loved the moons, if only because of the power they provided. But they always sent an arrow of cold darting through Lorcan. They were so beautiful.
Maybe that was why he hated them.”
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Oh my, do I have to just pick one place? I love Western Europe and dream of visiting Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. I’m also of Scots-Irish descent, so I hope to one day tramp across my ancestral homelands. But if I could only go one place, it would be New Zealand. I’m a major Lord of the Rings nerd, and it would be so awesome to visit the places where they filmed the movies! I especially want to see Bag End.
What are your top book recommendations?
Hmm… If we’re talking fiction, I would say The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. If you’re more interested in non-fiction: the Bible (of course), Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot, and Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris.
What is something you wish people would learn from your book? (Biblical application/Life lesson?)
The biggest thing I hope people take away from AWR is that redemption cannot come from ourselves. When we place our faith in Christ and trust Him to save us from our sins, He redeems us then and there. It’s not something we have to work to earn; it’s a free gift that God gives us willingly, regardless of who we are or what we’ve done.
About the Book:
Can two broken people ever find redemption?
Roshien Cochall has one goal: appear before the Gwyns and prove that she can move beyond the mistakes of her past. Nothing seems to move her closer to that goal, however, and she is left feeling stuck.
Lorcan Mactíre has been waiting patiently for nearly ten years to seize a cochall’s magic ring. Taking Roshien’s grandmother hostage, he lures Roshien to his fortress and holds her captive, confident that he will soon uncover her ring’s secret.
Is this Roshien’s opportunity for redemption? Can she somehow convince Lorcan to let her go—and maybe even take him with her? Or is this the beginning of her ultimate failure?
