How to Train Your Dragon v. the Draconians

“One day I’ll get out there. Because killing a dragon is everything around here.”

-Hiccup, How to Train Your Dragon

If you’ve been a fan of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise since the movies came out, you’ll know that Hiccup goes from wanting to kill a dragon to training one. His character growth from a physically and emotionally weak person to a person with an inner strength that can’t be denied is a thrill to watch. That’s not including the other emotional moments with his father and Astrid. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all three movies at least once, and the first one many times. So, it shouldn’t be any surprise that I took my inspiration for my Draconians at least a little bit from these movies.

Who are my Draconians? Well, they are my name for dragon-tamers who live in Draconia, a mountain range surrounded by lava fields made of ‘A‘ā lava. This type is “a rough rubbly surface composed of broken lava blocks called clinkers” (United States Geological Survey Website). This makes it difficult for anyone to cross, but the most successful are those who are Pyros. A Pyros is a fire-user, and they can withstand the heat and sharp objects that make up the fields.

The capital of Draconia is built within a crater that is still considered an active volcano, though the Draconians aren’t too concerned. Most of their houses are hewn from stone, and the Draconians themselves are fire-resistant. Draconians also take on some characteristics of their dragons, which means they can have anywhere from bright red to emerald hair colors. There are also not that many of them because of their size, which I discuss down below.

Now that I’ve introduced you to the Draconians, let’s take a look at some of the similarities and differences between my dragon race and the Vikings of How to Train Your Dragon.

Similarities:

Dragons are considered pets.

Dragons are ridden on makeshift saddles.

Dragons have animal-like intelligence (though probably not as intelligent as Toothless!).

Draconians have Viking accents (though they are not as Viking-like as my Kinzoku).

Differences:

My dragons are bigger. They usually are as tall as a two-story house with the neck outstretched.

Draconians take on the characteristics of dragons.

I mentioned this a bit before, but they have the same hair color as their dragon’s scales and their eyes are reptilian. This is much more like Fairy Tail’s dragon slayers than the dragon riders of Berk.

Draconians live near a volcano, not the ocean.

I love the city of Berk, but it looks nothing like my capital.

This is it for similarities and differences between my Draconians and the dragons from How to Train Your Dragon. I have definitely found other sources of inspiration from the dragons in Eragon, The Hobbit, and Songflight. However, I think this movie influenced my writing the most!

I love dragons and I enjoyed your blog for them. They are fascinating creatures. Do you know the Dragon Series by Donita k Paul? They are awesome books in my opinion and I really like how the dragons and their characteristics are being described and how they are working together with humans.
